MATERIALS:
Red Heart Super Saver Fleck*, 96% Solutia acrylic/4% other, worsted weight yarn, 6-ounce skeins:
9 skeins Aran Fleck #4313 (A)
4 skeins Burgundy Fleck #4376 (B)
3 skeins Navy Fleck #4387 (C)
Sizes 8/H and 9/I (5 and 5.5 mm) crochet hooks, or size to obtain gauge
Yarn needle

Gauge: In sc with larger hook, 16 sc and 25 rows = 5″ To make sure afghan is desired size, take time to check your gauge.

Size: Approximately 56″ x 70″

Note: To change color, work with current color to last pull-through of st, drop current color, work last pull-through with next color.

Afghan:
With A and smaller hook, ch 173 sts.

Row 1 (Right Side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across; turn–172 sts.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across, changing to C at end of row; turn. **

Row 3: With C, ch 1, sc in first sc, [yo, insert hook in row below next sc, yo, draw lp through, (yo, draw through 2 lps) twice to complete long dc, sk next sc in current row] twice; * sc in next 2 sc, (long dc in row below next st) twice; rep from * across to last sc, sc in last sc; turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each st across, changing to A at end of row; turn.

Row 5: With A, ch 1, sc in first 3 sc; * long dc in row below next 2 sts, sc in next 2 sc; rep from * across to last sc, sc in last sc; turn.

Row 6: Ch 1, sc in each st across, changing to B at end of row; turn. Drop A .

Row 7: With B, rep Row 3.

Row 8: Rep Row 4.

Row 9: Rep Row 5.

Row 10: Rep Row 2. Rep Rows 3-10 once more ***, then rep Rows 2-6 again but do not change to B at end of last row. Change to larger hook and work 30 rows even in sc with A, changing to C and smaller hook at end of last row **. Rep from ** to ** 4 more times, rep from ** to *** once more, then rep Rows 2-5 once more. Fasten off.

Finishing:
Edging:
Rnd 1: With right side facing and smaller hook, attach C in any st and work in sc evenly around entire afghan taking care to keep work flat; join with sl st to first sc; turn.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, working 3 sc in each corner; sl st to first sc. turn.

Rnd 3: Rep Rnd 2, and fasten off at end of rnd. With yarn needle and C, work Blanket Stitch around entire afghan, inserting needle in top lps only of each sc. Weave in all ends. Running St: With yarn needle and B, work 4 rows of Running St across each A section as follows: Bring needle over and under each sc across the last row of pattern st section, and the first, 26th and 27th row of the sc section.

Hearts (make 36):
With smaller hook and B, ch 3.

Row 1 (Right Side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch; turn–2 sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, (2 sc in next sc) twice; turn–4 sc.

Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc (inc made), sc to last sc, 2 sc in last sc; turn–6 sc.

Rows 4-9: Rep Row 3–18 sc at end of Row 9.

Row 10: Ch 1, sc in first 9 sc; turn.

Row 11: Ch 1, draw up lp in first 2 sc, yo, draw through 3 lps on hook (sc dec made), sc in each sc to last 2 sc, sc dec; turn–7 sc.

Rows 12 and 13: Rep Row 11–3 sc at end of Row 13. Fasten off. Attach B in next st at center of Row 9, ch 1, sc in same sc and across row–9 sc.

Complete to match first side. With right side facing and smaller hook, attach B and work in sc evenly around outer edge of heart keeping work flat; sl st to first sc.
Fasten off leaving a long sewing tail.
With yarn needle and C, work Blanket st around heart inserting needle into top lps only of each sc.
Pin 7 hearts evenly spaced across each A section. Sew in place.
